For the third edition of ESTHER III, anonymous will present a solo booth of new works by Jesse Gouveia centered around theories of psychosocial development.

Building upon the foundations of Sigmund Freud’s theories of childhood development, Eric Erikson expanded the framework to account for the ongoing influence of social dynamics and the continuation of psychological formation throughout the human lifespan. His theory proposes eight sequential stages of development shaped by biological, psychological, and social forces. Each stage is defined by the tension between two opposing psychological tendencies — one positive (syntonic) and one negative (dystonic). Through navigating these opposing conditions, individuals develop corresponding ego strengths or virtues that shape identity, perception, and social behavior.

Gouveia's presentation considers the physiologic theories of childhood development defined by eight developmental stages, each shaped by conflicts between opposing emotional or psychological stages. A concept developed by psychoanalyst and artist Erik Erickson in the 1950’s. Gouveia's works reflect on the instability between opposing emotional states and the ways individuals construct and graph meaning through cycles of conflict, adaptation and absolution.
