anonymous gallery is proud to inaugurate its new gallery space with a solo exhibition by artist Pryce Lee. The exhibition, Fish in a Barrel, showcases Lee’s continued explorations of violence, fragility and fragmentation. Expanding on previously explored techniques, this new body of work moves beyond a specific instance of violence and instead extends directly into the arena of the viewer, creating disassociations that ripple around a moment of forceful impact.

Lee’s work bares the tenuousness of life, subject to distortion in any single instance. In this sense, his work lies within the space that separates one moment from another, articulating the many possibilities that are born when wrath explodes upon life. Beautifully calibrated, Fish in a Barrel exists in the threshold between a flash and its reverberations, an ethereal study of violence.

The material quality of Lee’s installation further underlines the double narratives at play. Fish in a Barrel comprises a series of circular pieces, mounted on the wall and arranged in increasing order of size. Each artwork, individually pierced and shattered, is mirrored on an opposing wall, creating the optical effect that compels the viewer forward. The installation climaxes with a large, round fragmented tondo, fractured in seven forms that make a whole. The viewer becomes caught within the reflective surface of the pieces and the delicate nature of fate, thus activating the underlying message: we are all targets. We are all easy targets. We are all fish in a barrel.

Pryce Lee’s work interchanges between social commentary, personal experience and actual events. Lee experiments with diverse concepts, techniques and mediums to create visually arresting work that juxtaposes the boundaries and challenges of beauty, life and death. From single, autonomous pieces to large, site specific installations, Lee’s work is centered around space and motion, and provokes individual interpretation.

Lee’s work has been exhibited at Central Saint Martins in London and included in group exhibitions featuring celebrated artists such as Greta Alfaro, Julia Chiang, James Clar, Richard Garet, Naama Tsabar and Dustin Yellin. He has participated in projects, solo and group exhibitions in New York, Miami, Mexico City, and London.
