As part of a residency program that anonymous gallery performed throughout 2017, artist Brendan Lynch will present Different Dances. The title comes from a lesser known book by the artist, playwright, author, musician, and poet Shel Silverstein. The subjects of the stories are varied, but they cover the true complexity and diversity of the human experience. Birth, love, death, money, sex and everything in between.
With this in mind, Lynch’s project focuses on ideas of inspiration or influence, and linking that with the visual representation of touch. How touch can function on a wide range of feeling depending the context – from something loving, to something violent.
The show consists of seven murals based on the works of different artists – each mural representing a different form of touch. The artists included are Dese Escobar, Alex Da Corte, Sturtevant, Frank Frazetta, Natalia Mantini, Mario Ayala, and “fan art” he found created by the user UVER on deviantart.com. Each has played a major role in Lynch’s life as an artist. Using these influences, the exhibition will include paintings, drawings and sculptures inspired by them, in combination with the materials he has accumulated during his time in Mexico.
“Art is a cryptic language that can lead our thoughts in many different directions. It is similar to listening to a piece of music in a different language. How I can react very emotionally even without understanding exactly what is being said. I am playing a game with myself. I allow my thoughts and intuition to move freely after being stimulated by these pieces. “
Like a musical album with guest features, he exiles the solitude that comes with an individual exhibition, exploring his own creative process, yet freely inviting the infinite number of experiences that make each of us complex entities.
Over the course of five months, Lynch has worked on the the concepts and applications that make up this exhibition. Visiting sites of interest, markets, tianguis and the streets of Mexico City, the artist has accumulated materials – from local paintings of landscapes, animals and people, illustrated cards, stencils and even anonymous handwritten letters, among other things – Lynch creates these works as a testimony of his stay in the capital of Mexico.

it kind of feels like it started a long time ago. only now enough time has passed for it to feel complete. from a seed to flower. water, sun, and soil are crucial. there is no hope without touch, without an environment.

this is an act of adornment. this is an act of celebrating the influences that allowed it to become itself. this is an album with featured artists. but above all, this is a thank you.
