Curated by Neville Wakefield and launched in June 2011 as part of the opening week of the 54th Venice Biennale, Commercial Break features over 100 artists, each engaging with the relationship between advertising and culture. The project, which includes short digital works by recognized and emerging artists, has been shown all over the world.
Since the early days of Pop, in the work of Lichtenstein, Ruscha and Warhol – art has drawn direct influence from the language of advertising in the creation of hybrid collisions of high and low cultural forms. All of the sites for Commerical Break, offer very different relationships between art and advertising, but in all, they are always intrinsically linked.
During Zona MACO, April 9-14, large-scale billboard projections will be positioned in 4 separate locations, developing an intervention with the public and the city itself. The project will be presented in the popular neighborhoods of La Roma, Condesa, and on massive display outside Cineteca Nacional – Mexico’s National Film Archive, entrusted with rescuing, classifying, preserving, restoring, and exhibiting the most important cinematographic works from both Mexico and the world.
