anonymous gallery will host 2 events that hold space within architectural structures designed by Vito Acconci / Acconci Studio, in New York City.
The first onsite reading will take place Saturday, September 21 at 2pm, on the stairs of the “Wavewall” in Coney Island. It is the West 8 St - NY Aquarium (F/Q) subway train station. Organized by David Lindsay, the event will feature readings and performance by Drew Zebia, sgp, Geoffrey Mak, FUNTO, and Ty Little.
The inspiration for the Wavewall station's design was local sites - the historic Coney Island boardwalk, Cyclone roller coaster, the aquarium next to the station, and area beaches. The station is on the approximate site of a former roller coaster ride. The architect, Jim McConnell of Daniel Frankfurt, wanted to transform the exterior station walls in a unique way. Working with the architects, artist Vito Acconci developed an architectural treatment for the station façade that is full of life.
Before the station rehabilitation, the windscreens blocked ocean views. Today, the new windscreens open up the platform view of the Atlantic Ocean. In Acconci’s words, "The normally horizontal and vertical steel windscreen tubes and panels have been transformed into a more sinuous form that evokes the notion of a wave, or that of motion as in the Cyclone or the subway itself." The result is a striking and unique subway station that fits into its special surroundings. - MTA
The second event, in collaboration with Storefront for Art and Architecture, and again organized with David Lindsay, will feature readings from artists Elliot Reed and Kameelah Janan Rasheed. Justin Beal will read Vito Acconci's seminal essay Public Space in A Private Time. Acconci first presented and read the essay at Storefront in March of 1990, before it was published.
Storefront for Art and Architecture amplifies the understanding of the built environment through artistic practice. Founded in 1982 by artists and architects in downtown New York, Storefront has chronicled the changing urban landscape of the city over the years, and remains committed to producing and presenting work about diverse notions of place and public life.
Storefront’s gallery space is at 97 Kenmare St, New York, NY 10012 - the corner of Kenmare and Centre Streets in downtown Manhattan. In 1993, Storefront commissioned a collaborative building project by artist Vito Acconci and architect Steven Holl. The project replaced the existing exterior façade with a series of twelve movable panels that pivot vertically or horizontally to open the entire length of the gallery directly on to the street.
Storefront’s physical location and façade can be understood as a reflection of its mission and practice. It blurs the boundary between interior and exterior, and enables an endless possibility of panel configurations that encourage artists and visitors to create their own experiences of entry, navigation, and absorption into the gallery space. The unusual conditions of the gallery space, from its triangular floorplan to the unprecedented access to the street created by the façade, have made the gallery space an architectural landmark in New York City and in the collective imaginary of artists and architects worldwide.
