MURAL at “LA QUIÑONERA”
Santa Cruz 111, Barrio de la Candelaria, Coyoacán, México D.F.
Production : APRIL 16 – 18, 2012
La Quiñonera has been an emblematic space for the Mexican art scene since
the 80´s, located in the area Coyoacan, in Mexico City. It´s gardens and walls have
witnessed many experimental forms of art from artist such as Francis
Alys, Teresa Margolles, Grupo Semefo, Monica Castillo, Boris Viskin, Gabriel
Macotela, Gabriel Orozco, Santa Sabina y Caifanes. To this day, it maintains as an
independent and experimental space where artists manifest their political,
social, and visual ideas.
La Quiñonera has become a platform for cultural exchange, encouraging dialogue
through art interventions. During her visit to Mexico this April, Maya Hayuk was
invited to be part of this project and created a large-scale mural on the walls that surround the property.
May __, 8-10pm, Anonymous Gallery will be hosting a private dinner at La Quiñonera to celebrate this latest installment of creation on the grounds of this historic property.
Maya Hayuk obsesses with symmetry and nourishing color played out in what
might be views from the Hubble Telescope, airbrushed nail art, Ukrainian
Easter eggs, chandeliers, mandalas, Rorschach tests and/or holograms.
Embracing sexuality and spirituality via symbolism evocative of radiantly woven
geometries and beckoning parted orifices of the body, her work tries to decode
a process towards continuity and wholeness while striking chords of an almost
pathological optimism.
Muralist, painter and photographer based in Brooklyn. Her work has been
exhibited and published extensively internationally in galleries, museums, on the
streets and in various printed and electronic media. Hayuk has been a member
of the artist collective BARNSTORMERS since 2002 alongside artists including
Swoon, David Ellis, Doze Green and Ryan McGinness. She’s made all kinds of art
to support music, from album covers to videos to stage sets for Rye Rye/M.I.A,
The Akron Family, TV on the Radio, The Flaming Lips, Devendra Banhardt, Seun
Kuti, Prefuse 73, Awesome Color, Oakley Hall, Home, Animal Collective, Dan
Deacon and The Beastie Boys, amongst others.
In April of this year, Hayuk opened her first solo show, 2012 APOCABLISS with
Anonymous Gallery in Mexico City. For more information about the exhibition or project at La Quiñonera, please contact, info@anonymousgallery.com
