Maya Hayuk is a Ukrainian-American artist with a diverse skill set and creative repertoire. Her work combines intricate patterning, bright colors, and free association as she pieces together her paintings, prints, designs, drawings, videos, and photographs. Along with her solo work, Hayuk frequently collaborates with other artists. She paints large-scale murals with a group called the Barnstormers; Open Arms is a video project Hayuk and Home-guitarist Andrew Deutsch have developed. This connection to music has led her to design album artwork and photograph musicians. Whatever form the work takes, it is inspired by her interest and collection of Ukrainian folk art and traditional crafts. Maya Hayuk’s loaded imagery is simultaneously wild, spontaneous and carefully assembled. Hayuk’s oeuvre is dynamic and unpretentious; most of all the work is approachable and expresses an understanding of love, community and humanity.
